According to a press release from the Indian government, the Indian navy has entered an agreement to install "laser dazzlers" onto ships as a security device.

The Laser Dazzler is used to deter suspected vessels such as vehicles, boats, aircrafts, UAVs, and pirates. from entering protected spaces. The technology can work both day and night as a non-lethal means of deterrent.

Dazzle is a term typically used by navies to describe methods to obfuscate the sensing of ships from an enemy. Dazzle started as. a painting technique exemplified in the above photo where the streaks on the deck are intended to mislead submarines regarding the speed and position of the ship.

For modern laser-based methods, the dazzle capability deletes the action of the person/optical sensor with glare of impairment if commands are not complied with. It momentarily disorients/confuses/blinds a human. It even shines and distracts planes/UAVs. It is compact, shoulder-functional and roughing in adverse weather environments for combat use. Laser lightning technology has been developed by defense company for research and development (DRDO).

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed an agreement with the Indian Navy to supply 20 Stimulated Radiation Emission (Laser Dazzlers) Light Amplification Lines to New Delhi.

The technology here is the first of its sort in the Armed Forces. The introduction would serve the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
