Sudden Death: Ambushed in the Fog
"There is no time for caution, Watson!" Holmes cried, his voice cutting through the damp air. "If he reaches that boat, the trail is lost forever!"
Before I could protest, he vaulted over the railing and onto the slick stone steps. I followed close behind, my boots skidding on the patches of river-slime. The fog swallowed us instantly, turning the world into a featureless grey void where the only reality was the sound of our own breathing and the distant, rhythmic chug of the steam-launch’s engine.
We reached the bottom landing, but the shadowy figure had vanished. The scent of funeral lilies, however, was overwhelming—it seemed to rise from the very stones beneath our feet. Suddenly, Holmes gasped. I turned to see him clutching his throat, his eyes wide and unfocused. From the swirling mist behind him, a hand—pale and skeletal—emerged, wielding a slender silver needle.
I reached for my revolver, but a sharp, biting sting at the base of my neck stopped me mid-motion. My nervous system ignited with a flash of white-hot agony, followed immediately by a terrifying, heavy coldness. My knees buckled. As I collapsed onto the wet stones beside Holmes, I saw the "Ghost" looking down at us. Up close, his face was a nightmare of scars and greasepaint, his eyes devoid of any human light.
He didn't speak. He simply stepped over our paralyzed forms and boarded the waiting launch. As the boat pulled away into the blackness of the Thames, carrying the Treaty of Vienna and the last hope for peace, my vision began to fail. The 24 hours were up. The world would burn, and the Great Detective would not be there to stop the spark.
