The German Embassy Siege
The German Embassy stood as a monolith of stone and iron in the heart of Belgravia, its windows glowing with a defiant, late-night industry. By the time we arrived, the fog had been replaced by a biting wind that whipped the Union Jack on nearby buildings. Holmes did not approach the front gates; instead, he led me to a narrow mews behind the main carriage house.
"If the treaty reached this building, Watson, it is already being prepared for the telegraph wires," Holmes whispered, his breath a white plume in the cold. "Once those terms reach Berlin, the mobilization of the Triple Alliance becomes inevitable. We have minutes, not hours."
Using a specialized set of tension tools, Holmes made short work of the service entrance lock. We moved through the darkened kitchens and up a servant's staircase, our footsteps muffled by the thick carpets of the upper floors. We reached the heavy mahogany doors of the Ambassador’s private study. Inside, we could hear the frantic, rhythmic clack-clack-clack of a telegraph machine.
"That is the sound of Europe's funeral march," Holmes hissed. He drew a small, heavy smoke-bomb from his pocket—a contraption of his own making. "When I throw this, the room will be plunged into chaos. Your task is the telegraph operator; mine is the man with the dispatch box. Do not hesitate, Watson. The peace of the world rests on your aim."
With a sudden movement, Holmes kicked the door open and hurled the sphere. A thick, acrid cloud of grey smoke erupted within the room. Through the haze, I saw the silhouette of a man desperately clutching a sheaf of papers near the window. We lunged forward into the fray, the weight of history hanging on a single, desperate struggle in the dark.
